To tackle the frequent water-logging issues in Shela during the monsoon, AUDA has announced a ₹24 crore infrastructure plan. The project includes the installation of stormwater drains and sewage lines across the area. Shela, home to hundreds of societies and a growing population, has long needed such improvements. Work is expected to be completed by the end of May. This development is likely to enhance living conditions and boost real estate demand in the region.

Along with stormwater line installation, AUDA will also redevelop and deepen both lakes in Shela to tackle rainwater accumulation. These efforts aim to prevent flooding during the upcoming monsoon season. The project, costing around ₹24 crore, covers drainage work from Sky City Township to Club-07 Road. AUDA officials believe this dual approach will greatly improve the area’s water management and infrastructure.

The Rapid Urbanization of Shela

Shela’s town planning area under AUDA has seen rapid construction, especially around the Club-07 stretch, with several high-rise residential projects taking shape. As part of ongoing infrastructure upgrades, AUDA is installing a 1,525-meter long RCC NP-3 pipeline with a 1600 mm diameter. This pipeline will run from Sky City Junction to a pond in Garden Plot, FP No. 154 of Shela TP-1. The pond will also be deepened to improve rainwater management in the area.

Upgrading Shela’s Drainage System

To manage overflow from the proposed pond in Shela TP-1, AUDA will install a 1,690-metre long RCC NP-3 and NP-4 pipeline with a 2000 mm diameter. This pipeline will link the existing garden pond to a newly developed major pond in FP No. 189 of Shela TP-3. The interconnected system aims to improve water flow and prevent flooding during heavy rains.

Restoring Natural Water Flow

AUDA CEO Devang Desai stated that once the pond reaches full capacity, excess rainwater will flow naturally into the drainage system towards Kaneti. Both lakes have been included in the project for better water management. He emphasized that this initiative is vital for handling monsoon challenges. The new stormwater line will also help address issues caused by illegal drainage connections from nearby societies in Shela.

Tackling Illegal Drainage Connections

According to AUDA sources, the illegal drainage connections along the main sewage line near Club-07 are not being disconnected immediately. However, once the new sewage line is fully completed after the monsoon, these connections will be gradually diverted into the proper system. This step is part of a phased approach to streamline Shela’s drainage network and reduce future flooding risks.

Major Infrastructure Boost for Shela

AUDA is developing a new drainage system to serve Shela’s TP-1, 2, 3 and TP-403, 404 of Sanathal and Telav areas. This ₹235 crore project is part of a larger ₹2,100 crore fund sanctioned by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The initiative aims to strengthen infrastructure across rapidly growing zones. Shela, in particular, has seen significant real estate development in recent years, making such upgrades essential.
